About Us - MHI Story

MHI was founded by Bob Walker as Marine Hydraulics International in 1977. Very quickly the U.S. Navy regarded MHI as a reliable and cost effective resource. The relationship grew and expanded, and has continued for more than 30 years. MHI’s name became well known throughout the maritime community as the industry expert in marine hydraulic system repairs.

In more recent years, The U.S. Navy and commercial ship owners and operators have relied upon MHI Ship Repair & Services as the “go to provider” for an expanded array of ship repair and services including engineering and ship systems from controls to foundations, mechanical repairs, installs and piping systems.

In 1999, MHI launched Ocean Marine Yacht Center a state-of-the-art mega yacht overhaul and servicing facility located in Portsmouth, Virginia.

On January 1, 1999, Gary R. Brandt, a 31 year MHI veteran, took the helm as President and CEO. Under his leadership, MHI grew into a major ship yard facility featuring a 400 meter deep draft pier, production offices, and storage facilities located on the Elizabeth River in Norfolk, VA.

To meet the growing needs and expectations of our clients, on July 1, 2008 the employee owned stock of MHI was consolidated with the employee owned stock of Técnico Corporation forming American Maritime Holdings, Incorporated. AMH is one of the largest employee-owned Marine and Industrial companies in the United States.

Today, MHI Ship Repair and Services is benefiting from the seasoned leadership of Thomas Epley. Mr. Epley is a graduate of Penn State University and a former U.S. Naval officer. His deck-plate experience, perspective and winning attitude is a significant asset to the entire MHI organization.  Mr. Epley has been successful in forming alliances with other ship repair companies including BAE Systems. Mr. Epley is focused upon strategic initiatives that include performance and operational improvements, increased capabilities, diversification and business growth/expansion.
